The Use of Posters

Webster's New World Dictionary defines poster as "a large advertisement or notice, often illustrated, posted publicly." Historically, these usually colorful creations have been used extensively for advertising of both commercial products and political ideas, among other things. Posters have been used to sell products and ideas, announce events, and protest injustices. Their use has ranged from lighthearted entertainment to angry rebellion. In recent years, however, another use has surfaced ... one not mentioned in formal definitions, but non the less valid. That use is decoration or visual enhancement. No longer the "poor man's painting," posters have come to be sot after by some of the world's most renowned decorators. Today, one will not only find posters adorning the walls of the student's dorm room, but at the same time enhancing the motif of some of the wealthiest homes or displayed in a cherished gallery by the avid collector.

The Art of Decorating in Our Society Today

A note about decorating is in order here. You can hang about anything on your walls. People hang blankets, quilts, photographs, baskets, and any number of things on their walls in addition to paintings and other art objects.
